Cargotech | Embracing Technology is a Necessity for Truckers

Written by Fernando Correa | Dec 30, 2019 7:05:28 PM

Modern technology can make our lives easier by improving safety and efficiency in how things get done, and this includes the inland freight industry.

In a recently published request for comment, the U.S. Department of Transportation invited feedback from the public and stakeholders in the transportation industry on the Non-Traditional and Emerging Transportation Council (NETT).

The purpose of this request is to help the Council be more responsive to the needs of their audience.

What is NETT’s Goal?

The Department of Transportation created NETT to act as its internal deliberative body to identify and resolve jurisdictional and regulatory gaps that prevent the timely deployment of modern technologies like autonomous vehicles, hyperloop, tunneling, and other proposed innovations.

This is positive for the agency because it is common for new technologies to not fit into the DOT’s existing regulatory structure. NETT can act as the middleman between innovators and the DOT to assist with getting the needed permits, funding, and safety authorizations that may be difficult to obtain by trying to coordinate directly with the DOT.

“The NETT Council was established to provide a common portal to better engage with new technologies which are cross-modal. The department is seeking input on how to make the NETT Council work more effectively to prepare for the transportation system of the future,” said Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao.

Available Technologies Assisting the Inland Freight Industry

The continued and future success of carriers in the inland freight industry depends on the continued development of technologies that will help streamline everyday processes.

Today, several modern technologies are already in use, helping improve the lives of carriers and help them run their businesses more effectively. Some examples of modern tech streamlining business functions include:

1) Electronic Document Signing and Storage

A single shipment can require numerous documents and signatures. Some documents apply to the actual transaction between the carrier and the shipper. However, some records are required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to remain in legal compliance. Paper documents can be easily lost, misplaced, or accidentally destroyed.

Electronic document signing and electronic storage of shipping documents keep documents in a safe place. Such an electronic platform allows for immediate access when needed of bills of lading, trip records, and itineraries, including the origin and destination of each shipment.

2) Direct Communication with Shippers

Having direct communication with shippers makes the entire process more efficient. It eliminates the need to go through a broker that could result in delays or miscommunications, which can cause mistakes and leave drivers waiting around, wasting precious time, and costing businesses money.

3) Direct Bidding on Loads

Having the ability to directly bid on loads instead of going through a freight broker is more profitable for carriers. This allows you to negotiate directly with shippers. It also gives you the ability to obtain new clients and supplement your existing loads when you have gaps in between runs. This can make you more efficient while making the most of your time on the road.
